Imaginary Hybridities

‘Imaginary Hybridities’ is my newest project, which premiered in April at Queensland Conservatorium in Brisbane, Australia.

Here is a blurb from the concert premiere:

Drawing upon Brazilian and Cuban genres, 'post-jazz' and chamber music, 'Imaginary Hybridity' stages a counterhistory of musical interactions, a 'what could have been' that points to possible new futures. As we strive to weave together survival techniques in the face of ongoing global crises, we find value in re-narrating pasts and recuperating 'lost horizons'. This music is a small attempt to do so.

The premiere featured Chris Stover (trombone, percussion, compositions), Erik Griswold (harmonium and percussion), Sophie Min (piano), Helen Russell (bass), Dominic Machen (drumset), Dave Anderson (percussion), and Kent Windress (percussion).

Here is a montage of excerpts from three songs: ‘Hybridity no. 5’, ‘Hybridity no. 3’, and ‘Hybridity no. 6’.

Here is Hybridity no. 2, which begins with rumba guaguancó and moves through a shifting panorama of juxtaposed styles and textures before ending with a rousing toque for the Orisha Yemayá.
